Ray Kamalay

    Ray Kamalay traces the development of early American music from its links to slavery up to the early jazz age. Discussion will include freedom, ancient and modern slavery, liberty, spirituals, blues, minstrel shows, ragtime and jazz. Ray, a Detroit native with a degree in philosophy from the University of Detroit, is a longtime professional musician and contributes to performances of the various genres. Ray Kamalay and the Red Hot Peppers, a jazz group played the Dogwood Center in April 2008.

Eric Villegas

Cooking Demonstration and Book Signing

    Chef and cookbook author Eric Villegas will demonstrate cooking using local ingredients. Villegas is host of Fork in the Road, a PBS show that promotes foods from around the state. On the show he visits different parts of Michigan showcasing our rich agricultural resources and unique foods. He is also the author a cookbook Fork in the Road which was selected as a Michigan Notable book in 2008.

Dianne Glupker

Dianne Glupker

   Author Dianne Glupker will make regional treats from her book Great Tastes of Michigan. Glupker is a retired elementary teacher. The book, part travel guide, part cookbook details festivals from around the state and includes a related recipe. Glupker is also the author of Great Lights of Michigan. She wrote her books for elementary students and their teachers but anyone can enjoy them.. Both books are illustrated with watercolors by Dawna Delsi.

Kirsten Kelly

Aspargus! Stalking the American Life
runtime 53 minutes
 

   Kirsten Kelly is a graduate of The Julliard School where she was awarded the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Advanced Studies in Directing. She has directed theater extensively in New York, Chicago, and Washington D. C. She was recently nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for best Direction. Kelly was raised on an Asparagus farm in Oceana County. The film, co-directed, and co produced by Anne de Mare unveils the intricate connections among community identity, family farming, national politics, and international trade.

Peter Fletcher

Peter Fletcher

Prize winning classical guitarist Peter Fletcher began guitar study at age 9 and played his first professional concert by age 15. His first CD, is a celebration of Catalan composer Federico Mompou. Other than the Suite Compostelana, composed for guitar, Mompou’s music is almost exclusively for piano. In demand as a performer in cultural venues throughout the country, Mr. Fletcher has been invited to give recitals at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY; Cincinnati’s Memorial Hall; Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina; the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, DE, and many others.
